It was SUB-ZERO’s spine-pulling fatality that made the first game so controversial during its release. Back then, games were cartoony and PG-rated. Characters were colourful and cute… and were clearly cartoons.
And then Mortal Kombat happened, with its gory fatalities and sprites that resembled actual people. Plus there was blood, ZOMG! The parents were up in arms.
Mortal Kombat changed the face of the gaming industry forever. And thanks to it, we now a ratings system in place for video games.
The Sub-Zero/Scorpion rivalry is one of the most epic in any video game series. Since we did Scorpion a few weeks ago, I thought it’s time to revisit Mortal Kombat X once more and show you how to draw his main rival.
Gone are the days when these two characters were just colour-swapped sprites of each other. Now they have very distinct costumes, rich in textures and details that they’re so much fun to draw.
I hope you enjoy this tutorial. Stay till the end where I answer the question: “Are you going to do more Overwatch characters?” Timestamp is 32:43.
Happy drawing,
Ramny
I apologize for the static in my audio again. I never know when there are sound issues until I finish recording and upload the video file into my editing program. 🙁
CHARACTER BIO:
There are in fact two Sub-Zeros: older and younger. Both are blue garbed warriors (assassins, but not “ninjas”, since the Lin Kuei are Chinese despite being called ninjas in several Mortal Kombat games) that descended from Cryomancers, an Outworld race possessing the ability to generate and control the powers of ice, although both of them were born in Earthrealm. The younger one bears a conspicuous scar on his right eye, however, as of Deception the scar has faded away. The Elder Sub-Zero appeared in the first Mortal Kombat and then, after being killed by Scorpion, his younger brother replaced him for the rest of the games, his elder brother later became the undead Netherealm wraith, Noob Saibot.
